Dear endeared and loving parents,
I have recently led a “rebel” force in the battle of Antietam. The sea of blood was uncomprehendablly brutal. Walking around finding finger belonging to your best friend. Men carrying dead fellows on their backs to protect against gunfire. I long to return home.
 Love,
Robert Edward Lee

Dear, Mom and Dad,
I have very much enjoyed the friendships and courage, I have been taught because of my enlistment into the military. But with everything good their is and equal and opposite evil in the military. The thrilling horrors I have witnessed. Men dying from blood loss through their chopped of hands. Motionless solidiers still clutching their muskets with broken bayonets. I very much wish to return to the simpler common folk lifestyle. I will keep fighting so that I may someday return to my beloved family,
